Our History
"In a nut shell"
In the early 1980's my father, Dick Butcher created a company,
making peanut brittle and fudge in the basement of his Elmira, Ontario
home. It wasn't long before the demand for his product necessitated
the need to move to larger facilities, along with the complaints of his
neighbours who didn't appreciate awakening to the smell of his copper
fudge pots cooking almost non stop.
He very quickly outgrew the small industrial unit he moved to, and
moved again to a huge 2000 sq. ft. unit on Howard Ave. in Elmira. As the
company grew we over took the unit beside us and knocked a hole in the
wall, eventually amassing 6000 sq ft. of production area. This was to be our home base for over 12 years.
Dad loved living in Elmira, a small town located in the center of
Mennonite country, where the Mennonites still travel by horse and buggy.
The name"Horse & Buggy Brands" was born from his fascination
of the simplicity of these people.
The company evolved to becoming a peanut roaster, and Dad became a
master at developing new recipes to candy coat his peanuts and
incorporate them into mixes. Eventually candy and deli products were
introduced to compliment the line of snack foods. Back then all the products
were hand packaged and labeled, not like today where our two automated packaging
machines equipped with label applicators churn out product non stop.
Dad passed away April 4, 2000, leaving behind a legacy and a dream to
be carried on by myself and my children. We strive to maintain the high
standards and quality of products that he expected.
June, 2003 I moved the company from Elmira to Cambridge, Ontario.
Continuing to grow we were in need of better facilities, and our new
location provided that along with a good proximity to all major
highways.
We continue to upgrade our operations and constantly search for new
recipes and products to enhance our large snack food line. Things that
will never change: the quality, the freshness,
and the dedication to our customers. Thank you
for making Horse and Buggy Brands the success it is today!
